Adverbs in Armenian

Adverbs have 3 common suffixes:

  1. -աբար
  2. -որեն
  3. -պես

Several commonly used examples of each group of adverb is listed below:

-աբար

համեմատել  to compare  Համեմատաբար  comparatively 
ընկեր  friend  Ընկերաբար  friendly 
մայր  mother  Մայրաբար  motherly

-որեն

անմիջապես immediately 
Հոգեպես psychologically

բացարձակապես  absolutely 
իսկապես  really 
ֆիզիկապես  physically 

Adverbs are placed before the verb they refer to.

  1. Հասմիկը մայրաբար օգնում է փոքրիկին։ Hasmik helps the small child as a mother would do.
  2. Աշոտը արագորեն բացում է դուռը։ Ashot quickly opens the door.
  3. Ձմռանը մենք ֆիզիկապես հանգստանում ենք։ In winter we rest physically.


Sometimes nouns in the instrumental case can be used as adverbs. “խաղաղություն” is a noun meaning “peace”, but when put into the instrumental case becomes “խաղաղությամբ,” which means “with peace” or “peacefully.”

  1. Վեճն ավարտվում է խաղաղությամբ: The argument ends with peace.
  2. Նա համբերությամբ է աշխատում մարդկանց հետ։ He patiently works with people.


Some words, such as լավ and վատ can be used both as adjectives and as adverbs.

  1. Անուշը լավ աշխատող է։ Anush is a good worker.
  2. Անուշը լավ է աշխատում։ Anush works well.
