Il existe deux genres en langue Kabyle: le masculin et le féminin.

Les noms masculins commencent généralement par les lettres "a", "i" et "u". Exemples: akal (terre), itri (étoile), uccen (chacal).

L'exception est faite aux mots emprunts d'autres langues et qui peuvent avoir pour consonne la première lettre, à l'instal de lmizan (balance), plastik (plastique).

Les noms féminins commencent pour la majorité par la lettre "t" et se terminent également par la lettre "t", comment talwit (paix), tigzirt (île), tamellalt (œuf).

Certains mots féminins peuvent être privés de la lettre "t" de fin, comme tala (fontaine), tili (ombre), tiziri (claire de lune).

L'exception est également faite aux mots emprunts d'autres langues qui peuvent commencer par d'autres lettres que "t", comme lmeḥna (misère).

Ces règles s'appliquent également aux adjectifs. Toutefois, pour former le féminin d'un adjectif, il suffit d'ajouter un "t" au début et un autre à la fin. Exemples:

aberkan (noir), taberkant (noire); aleqqaq (tendre au masculin), taleqqaqt (tendre au féminin).
