When I decided to get serious with my Spanish, after almost six months of being devoted just to English, I had announced it to all my friends and thought that they’d instantly support me!

Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case. Some of my Spanish friends, it turns out, had been using me to get free English practice. Some of my English speaking friends were not interested in supporting me in this endeavour and would speak back to me in English and tell me to just take a break, since they don’t have any patience to help me.

While I was in France, for 9 months I found that my co-workers and those I would meet out and about in Paris would be very much impatient with my attempts to use French with them. It gave me a negative experience of Paris for many years until I went back to see why it happened.

Lorsque j’ai décidé de travailler sérieusement mon espagnol, après avoir consacré presque six mois à l'anglais, je l'ai annoncé à tous mes amis en pensant qu’ils allaient forcément me soutenir!

Malheureusement, ce ne fut pas le cas. Certains amis espagnols, comme il s’est avéré, avaient profité de moi pour pratiquer l’anglais gratuitement. Certains amis anglophones n’avaient aucun intérêt à me soutenir dans cet effort et me parlaient de nouveau en anglais en me disant de faire une pause, car ils n’avaient pas de patience pour m’aider.

Durant mon séjour de 9 mois en France, j’ai trouvé mes collègues de travail et ceux que je rencontrerais un peu partout à Paris très impatients avec mes tentatives d'utiliser le français avec eux. Cela m'a donné une impression négative de Paris pendant de nombreuses années jusqu'à ce que je sois revenu en arrière pour comprendre pourquoi cela est arrivé.
