Soon enough I was getting treated less like a tourist and found it easier to converse and communicate for extended periods in Arabic.
Studying a new language may not turn you into you the super spy polyglot, but it does expose you to cultural nuances and behavioural cues that will help you blend in when travelling to that country.

Lorsque j’ai visité l’Egypte dans le cadre de mon apprentissage de l’arabe, j’ai pu remarquer que les autochtones m’identifiaient rapidement comme étranger. Souvent, ils s’adressaient à moi en anglais, même si j’avais entamé la conversation en arabe. Après avoir étudié de près les us et coutumes des égyptiens locaux, j’ai pris compte de leur comportement pour l’adapter au mien, et ai même changé ma coupe de cheveux et mes chaussures. Très rapidement, on me traitait moins comme un touriste et il m’était moins difficile de converser et communiquer plus longuement en arabe.
Vous ne deviendrez probablement pas un super espion polyglotte en apprenant une langue, mais vous serez assurément exposé aux nuances culturelles et comportementales, vous aidant à vous intégrer lorsque vous êtes à l’étranger.
