I want to ask Arabs. Please tell me guys how often do you have to speak Fusha Arabic in your everyday conversations.. I want to learn Arabic, I'm going to Egypt soon on holiday, and I need to know for what I should be prepaired.. Say, can I come to the store and speak the Fusha Arabic, I wonder if I would be stared by everyone as an idiot then? Please tell me what would you think and feel if someone one day greeted you in the street and started to talk in Standart Arabic to you? In which language would you reply? And if one asked you to talk in Standart Arabic instead of 3ammeeya would you do that and how easy would it be for you to talk in Standart Arabic in your everyday life?
I tell you why I warry - in Russian forums there's an opinion which is very popular - the Fusha Arabic is almost useless for street conversations in the store, in the beach, in the museums and at the bus stations.. There's even a Russian joke told by one tourist or someone.. When the Russian took a taxi and told to the driver where he need to go (in Fusha) the driver answered "صدق الله العظيم" thinking that the Russian was reading the Quran.. This is a funny story, I don't think that it's true and the Arabs do understand Fusha (I see that many cartoons for children in Standart Arabic and hosts of many programms speak it).. But anyway I am afraid that the Arab I will be talking to replys in his native accent and I wouldn't understand him...

| hamad014December 2012 I see what you are worry about, but I would tell you that almost all Arabs can understand Fusha, However we don't talk in the Fusha |

Abu-l-HoolDecember 2012 Ok.. I see. However anyway, I know that there are movies and cartoons for children and they in Fusha (even for children of 5-7 y.o.), why? Why not in Ammeeya? And one more more question - imagin that you need to talk to non-Arabic speaker, what would you prefer - to talk in Fusha ar in English?? Shukran gazilan ))

| IslamKaDecember 2012 Salam Alykom. I am Egyptian and I think it's better to speak the Egyptian accent, 3ammya. For me if someone talks to me in fusha, to be honest I would laugh because it's very rare here to speak it. I am so sad to say that, but this is the truth even not everybody here can speak fusha. They might tell you "eh enta bt2ol eh" . and if you are lucky, you would find someone can understand you. |
