What is the best way to learn English language in a short period? There are a lot of people, who reckon, that if you want to learn English you must listen to records, podcasts, songs a lot.  But when I listen to it, I don't catch some words such as did, do, has...What do you think about it? Interesting to know opinions of native speakers!smiley

I must agree with mk00.

The problem with songs is that you only have sound but no context (visual, interractions between people in daily life, slang, moods...) with wich you can associate words and sentences.

The best way to proceed I think is to watch lectures (Yalecourses have quite a lot and with subs), documentaries on internet or  movies. Always watch movies in VO (of course) first with subs in your native tongue, then with subs in the VO language and then without any subs at all. You should be able to quickly understand the most commonly used words, sentences and expressions. The other advantage is to be confronted with a lot of accents (some can be very hard to understand! scottish for example), cultures (west coast, east coast, southerner american, british...) and time periods, so you learn culture, history and vocabulary all at once... And all that without even having the impression that you're working, but rather having fun.

For me it's the best and cheapest way to live in a culture without actualy physicaly travelling. It's not that helpful for really speaking (for that, nothing can replace talking with real people), but it's great for understanding real life conversation.

the best way to learn a language fast is to practice it regularly. listening to records and watching movies is a good thing, but if you want to develop your speaking skills, you've got to work hard in order to acquire certain automatisms. it is very important if you want to be more or less fluent in the language you're learning.

so, here are some tips that could be useful:

-first and foremost you must try to speak as often as you can. even to your friends who are not native speakers but know some english. it could be fun :) (finally, you can always speak to yourself, just for training)
-read something every day, no matter what. it would be an important addition to listening and watching videos. while reading your internal voice will follow the text and so your brain will be getting more and more used to the new language.
-read aloud. any kind of text, why not wikipedia articles, but on a regular basis. this will help you to work on your pronounciation and to train speech automatisms.
-learn by heart: a) lists of words and expressions, which is a bit boring, but unevitable. b) learn whole texts by heart. you can take some short articles from news sites for example, doesn't matter. the point is to learn to speak without hesitation, without pauses, automatically.

the last point may seem a bit rude, but that's how it works in the soviet system of professional linguistic education. its effectivness have been proven through years. :)
after all, the main problem here is self-discipline.

First, to take a course of some language and then to go to this country and live there for a while, but of course, it`s not possible for everybody.
